- Types of rope
- Nylon/MFP, Hemp, Jute, Cotton – More info here.
- Types of cutters – Always have a cutter handy (Not in the bottom of your bag where it can be harder to find.)
- Safety Scissors – Blunted tip for easily getting between the skin and rope without cutting the skin. Designed for limited use but probably the quickest and safest option. If you use them to cut a few ropes, retire it and keep a fresh one handy. (Leatherman Raptors are my personal choice. They last forever and fold up into a holder on the outside of my rope bag.)
- Rescue Hook – Works for ropes under tension but can be hard to cut through ropes that aren’t pulled tight. Sometimes applying extra tension when trying to cut ropes off is not a good idea.
- Knives are never a good idea as it is very easy to cut the person while trying to cut the rope.
